  1. c. 1150-1228. English priest. He studied in
  2. Paris, where he became chancellor of the
  3. university, and in 1206 was created a
  4. cardinal. When in 1207 Pope Innocent III
  5. secured Langton's election as archbishop of
  6. Canterbury, King John refused to recognize
  7. him, and he was not allowed to enter England
  8. until 1213. He supported the barons in their
  9. struggle against John and was mainly
  10. responsible for drafting the charter of
  11. rights, the Magna Carta. He continued to work
  12. for revisions to both church and state
  13. policies, which could only begin to go into
  14. effect after the death of John.
